Operation SCE Wharf to Wharf 2011

Following the success of the recent Spring Marathon Project SCE is offering a coached interval workout on Thursday nights and an informal Sunday morning run to train its runners up for two big redezvous in July. The Santa Cruz Wharf to Wharf which SCE dominated last year with 13 runners making the Top 100. We will also be putting a team together for the Team Competition of the San Francisco 2nd Half Marathon a week later.

We hear it all the time. Athletes are interested in SCE but are worried about "not being fast enough". We disagree, you're not fast enough...yet. But we understand that being around some of the stars of SCE can be intimidating and as such one of our members Aimee Escalante has volunteered to help. Aimee is experienced helping novice runners. She will be available to introduce new athletes to SCE, help them feel comfortable joining in our group workouts and to assure them they won't be left behind. You'll find our athletes are very supportive of new runners.

The cost of SCE membership has been reduced to $60 for the rest of our season (valid 07/31/11). All you have to do is to sign up on our membership page (if you're not already a member) to join in the fun.

If you wish to have more personalized coaching to complement the SCE workouts both coaches, Martin Spierings and Aaron Jacobsen, are available to help you achieve your goals.

A busy weekend of racing, both road and trail, local to Santa Cruz and SCE was out in force.

Ryan Hoffman completed the Santa Cruz Half marathon in 1:18:48 good for 9th overall and 4th in his age group. Dan Wirls was rightfully awarded first in his age group but was beaten on elapsed time (see team director's blog/rant on this very subject) by just 5 seconds. Aimee Escalante was also out there representing. Full results found here.

13 year old phenom Andrew Walgren set a smoking 38:29 PR at the 10K event, needless to say this won him his age group, and had him 6th overall. Julie Stockwell finished 5th woman with a 41:29 PR in the same event.

Rohanna McCord finished 3rd woman overall in the marathon distance pc trails Skyline-to-the-Sea race. Cari Martin fell on her head and still finished 8th woman overall in the 50K

Stephen Wassather came 13th overall at the 50 mile American River 50 mile race yesterday in 6:49, winning his age group and smashing the SCE club record. Adam Blum crossed the line in 8:20.

But wait there's more. The Artichoke half marathon was held in Pescadero and Liz Dane finished 5th overall with Margaret Ellis not far behind. From experience official results to this race will be hard to find.

Please comment with corrections or other SCE racers we may have missed.
